Green the Scene: Zero Waste Bound is a brand identity and signage system I designed for Ulster County, New York to support their new zero waste grant program. The program helps municipalities and nonprofits host zero waste events by providing funding and a branded toolkit to bring sustainable waste practices to fairs, festivals, and community gatherings across the Hudson Valley.
I designed the full visual system from the ground up, including the logo and brand identity, event wayfinding signage, waste sorting station signs, and digital assets for social media and the web. The brand needed to work across a lot of different contexts, from a small social media post to a large outdoor sign at a crowded festival, so consistency and clarity were central to every design decision. The visual language draws on scrapbook collage, paper texture, and printmaking to give the system a handmade, tactile quality that connects back to the idea of scraps and composting. The result is a system that feels approachable and fun while still doing a serious job of helping people understand how to reduce waste and why it matters.
Ulster County Green the Scene
The Ulster County Green the Scene program uses a bold, nature-forward visual identity built around deep greens and warm cream tones. The wordmark works on both light and dark backgrounds and is set in Lilita One for headings and Source Sans Variable for body text. Illustrated food scrap icons — a fish skeleton, banana peel, tomato, and eggshell — reinforce the zero-waste theme throughout the brand.
Zero Waste Station yard signs use bold typography and a large directional arrow to help festival-goers quickly locate recycling and food scrap drop-off points. Illustrated fruit and vegetable motifs reinforce the zero-waste message visually, while the back of the A-frame sign provides educational context about composting for attendees who may be sorting food scraps for the first time.
Three bilingual English and Spanish sorting station signs — for Bottles & Cans, Food Scraps, and Landfill Trash — use a simple YES/NO icon system so event attendees can sort waste correctly at a glance without needing to read lengthy instructions. Illustrated food visuals and the Green the Scene branding keep the stations feeling like a cohesive part of the event rather than an afterthought.
The Green the Scene brand extends to social media and the web through an Instagram post and a web banner on Ulster County's participation portal. The social graphic communicates grant eligibility and deadlines — up to $2,000 per event for compostable supplies, hauling, and zero-waste coordination — while the web banner gives the program a strong visual anchor online that connects back to the physical signage attendees may encounter at local events.
